Enjoy this read - but reading the article about Jessica Mitford, I was disappointed in the inaccuracy. The writer states that “ the brother, like Branwell Brontë, merits no consideration” and yet the sixth sister - the second daughter, Pamela - is written out of the article completely. As the most rural and least political of the sisters, she doesn’t excite the same commentary but she at least deserves to be counted amongst their number. After all, she owned an Aga that matched her beautiful eyes.
Jason - you have saddened me even more this weekend … if that is even humanly possible! … by this nihilistic capitulation! The world is systematically choosing “nasty” over “nice” and “depraved” over “decency”! If I’m to be vilified for preferring the latter in each case, my point is proven! Recriminations are futile … there is no permutation of choices by the Democrats that would have altered this result. Money is God and those with it know everything has a price and they can buy anything they want. The Divided States of America sold out and is now completely owned by an exclusive Club of White Guys! My heart is broken and bleeds for my NICE and DECENT American Friends.
Forgive me that I find myself utterly pissed off with your opening message.
While I do agree with some of your ideas, your delivery stinks and here is why.
My situation is as below and I am yet to find a hopeful word from you to make the burden a little less horrific:
A) I was born in Israel but am no longer an Israeli because I cannot be associated with this government. And, yes, I did lose friends on 7th October but cannot agree that this justifies a genocide in Gaza (nor Lebanon an the West Bank). I have an elderly activist sister who goes to demonstrations ( against the government) every Saturday and as police brutality increases so is violence
I hosted a Ukrainian family (including two young children) in my house. They come from Kharkiv and still have their closest families there,
I watched their traumatic development as they struggled to settle down and experience an education system so different from their own.
After many sleepless nights please forgive if after your bitter and dark words, once again, I shall turn to sleeping pills
Please remember the power to criticise is a hell-of-a lot easier than the power to build up hope, especially when you are not personally affected
Thank you very much for featuring my article on Rachel Cusk; it was a particular treat have it to appear alongside Anna Leszkiewicz's fine interview.
